A Trek to Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge in White Mountain Region of NH

INTRODUCTION:

In early November 2019, I did an out-and-back trek to Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge via the Slide Brook Trail and Presidential Range Rail Trail . . . always a delightful little hike!😀

The Refuge is located in the northern White Mountain region of New Hampshire in the towns of Jefferson, Whitefield, and Carroll.  It covers nearly 6,500 acres of wetlands and forest, includes 3 ponds, and has a wide variety of wildlife, especially birds. The sweeping views from the wetlands and ponds are truly unique.  In 1972, it was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.  For more information about the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge, click HERE.

There are several ways of accessing Pondicherry.  The route I chose was about 5.5 miles (round-trip), and it’s highlighted in yellow on the map shown below.  It should be noted that accessing the trailhead for the Slide Brook Trail involves parking at the Owl’s Head parking lot, and further noted that this trailhead is NOT plowed during snow season.

Hi John,

I remember (I think?) seeing previous posts from Pondicherry Refuge. Looks like a wonderful place for return visits. Tim and I regularly visited a wildlife refuge in northern Utah to see a variety of birds—until the state diverted water from the refuge for agriculture, and the number of birds plummeted.

I like the photo taken from the observation deck. Did you see any wildlife on this trek?

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Cheri!

Hi Rita . . . you have a great memory! Yes, I have indeed done other blog postings about adventures to Pondicherry. And as you correctly state, it is a wonderful place for return visits.
That is so sad to learn about the adverse impact on the bird population at the wildlife refuge in your area after the State opted to divert water from it for agriculture.

Regarding your question . . . nope, no wildlife was seen on this visit to Pondicherry.

And last but certainly not least, Cheri and I send our very best wishes to you and Tim for happiness and good health throughout the holiday season.

John
